What is Community Service?
Community Service is time that students spend helping different areas of the community. This is unpaid service that the students will complete on their own time. There are a variety of ways to volunteer for community service and there are some areas that will not count for community service. Please ask you counselor if the activity you are planning of performing is considered community service before starting. Community service is not hours performed through court appointed programs or teaching religious beliefs. Community Service is not required for high school graduation but is required for many scholarships including Bright Futures.
How to document community service hours?
Community service hours must be documented on the community service form. Students should fill out the form once the service is completed and have their supervisor sign, date, and provide a phone number. The form needs to be turned into the school counselor. This is the responsibility of the student. Students will be given the opportunity to find out about community service but it needs to be completed on their own time.
